Description:
This year I am willing to allow my coop and garden to be on tour. I am
a Cupertino resident with 1/4 acre in which the house takes a majority
of the lot. I have four levelly hens that are my pets (they come when
calling and like being held, plus are very gentle). There are two coops
for my hens – one main coop and a tractor coop for them to enjoy the
lawn and turn other areas in yard while not disturbing my edible garden.
I am a Master Gardener of Santa Clara county and appreciate that the
hens add so much to my urban garden.
There are multiple fruit trees, including:
citrus (orange, lemon, mandarin, grapefruit and more!)
apple
pear
peach
plum (Santa Rosa)
apricot
cherry
blueberries
raspberries
blackberries
It is my goal to have year around edibles (farm to table) food
production where we can obtain a majority of the food directly from the
yard. In that vein, I have lots of vegetables, including:
tomatoes (many varieties — 12 plants and doing trial tasting)
squash (zucchuni and yellow crook neck)
watermelon
cantaloupe
green beans
peas
basil
artichoke
eggplant
onions
garlic
kale
sunflowers
lettuce and salad greens
Outside my kitchen window are some herbs; a sampling include:
borage
lemon balm
camomile
sage
stevia
My hens help my compost and almost every edible item that isn’t eaten by
humans or chickens goes into the compost. Leaves and larger pieces are
chipped about once or twice a month and many pounds of compost is
generated that helps the following crops thrive.
